The Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work was first published in 2016. It quickly became a project management guide for implementing modern methods of construction (MMC). The new edition, based on five years of evolution, aligns with the RIBA Plan of Work 2020.

DfMA is not just a technical process; it’s also a philosophy that extends the designer’s ordinary way of working. It doesn’t alter the fundamentals of good design and production, which have always aimed at the best possible outcomes for clients and communities.

Dispelling the myth that DfMA is a barrier to great architecture, the case studies in the report highlight its potential for extraordinary, award-winning architecture. DfMA is relevant to all kinds of projects, including small ones and work on existing buildings.
